Packing may seem like a simple task, but done wrong and it will make your life harder so much harder when on vacation! Applying a bit of strategy to it can ensure that your trip will run smoothly without you needing to lug around unnecessary items.
Here is my guide on how to pack a suitcase so efficiently, you’ll never need to experience the headaches of stuffing your belongings in a suitcase ever again.
Choose the proper luggage
Determine the size and type of luggage depending on the duration and purpose of your trip. If you’re going away just for a short period, you obviously take a smaller backpack/suitcase. Also, choosing a smaller suitcase will deter you from bringing too many things, and allow you to keep an eye on it instead of checking your baggage because I mean, who really knows what happens underneath the plane.
Check the weather
Having a general idea on how the weather will be like during your trip will help you decide which clothes you should bring with you.
Shoes as extra storage space
Every inch of your suitcase should be filled. For example, socks, belt and other random items should be put in your shoes. Then place your shoes heel to toe at the bottom of your suitcase in a plastic bag to not get your other clothes dirty.
Roll your clothes
Roll your clothes as they will take up less space and have less wrinkles (nobody really likes to iron on holidays now, do they?). You can have even more space by wrapping each article of clothing around a central core, with underwear and t-shirts at the center, and large clothing items on the outer layers.
Wear bulky items there and back
Bulkier items such as jackets and sweater are better kept folded. You can save a lot of space by wearing your bulkiest item on your way to and from your destination. Also, dressing in layers lets you adapt to changing temperatures without having to fish through your suitcase for other clothing items.
Plan outfits ahead with versatile pieces
Choose your clothes wisely and pick items that work for multiple outfits. Don’t bring things based on the ‘just in case I need it’ principle. Bring only what you absolutely know you’ll wear.
Store all toiletries in a clear plastic bag
Toiletries should be always placed on top of your suitcase in a clear bag, it makes life easier when you’re going through a T.S.A. line at the airport. Also, make sure that your shampoo, conditioner etc. are in bottles that respect airport regulations.
Keep electronics and cords separate
Avoid getting your cords tangled in with all your other stuff and put them in a separate clear bag. Also, keep blow dryers and others neatly, either in their original bag or with the cord wrapped around it.
Leave room for souvenirs
We all love to bring home some souvenirs to remind us of our wonderful time spent on vacation. Be them for your home, family or friend, take the time and make sure you have some room allocated for such items.
I hope my pointers will be of help in your trips, and spare you of the inconveniences that come along with travelling with extra baggage. After all, packing does not always have to be a nightmare!
